Hawthorn & Key began with a simple idea: that an ordinary home can still hold a little room for old stories.
A candle on a mantelpiece, a journal beside the bed, a wooden box on a writing desk or a cup of tea on a rainy afternoon may not change the world. They can, however, make a quiet corner of it feel more personal. Some objects earn their place in a home slowly. They become part of a familiar shelf, a reading corner, an evening routine or a small tradition that needs no grand explanation.
Hawthorn & Key Ltd brings together curious objects and thoughtful writing inspired by British folklore, old houses, hedgerows, seasonal customs and the quieter side of everyday ritual.
A name with roots
Hawthorn has long belonged to the British landscape: in hedgerows, along garden paths and at the edges of old fields. It appears in local traditions, seasonal customs and stories that have travelled through generations. Like many things in folklore, it carries more than one meaning. It may suggest protection, caution, spring blossom, old boundaries or the sense that some places deserve to be approached with care.
The key adds a second layer. A key may open a cabinet, a desk drawer, a garden gate or a box of old letters. It may be entirely ordinary and still carry a little mystery.
Together, the two words describe the character of the shop rather well: rooted in familiar things, curious about older stories and never in too much of a hurry.
Curious objects for the home
Our collections are chosen for homes, gifts, reading corners, writing desks and slower moments.
You may find candles, journals, incense, tea, apothecary-inspired pieces, stones, cards, boxes, decorative objects and small items that bring a little warmth or character to an ordinary room. Some are connected with old traditions. Others are simply pleasing things to keep on a shelf, give to a friend or use as part of a personal routine.
We do not present these objects as cures, guarantees or shortcuts to a different life. A candle remains a candle. A journal still asks you to provide the words. A small charm may hold personal meaning, but it does not need an impossible promise attached to it.
Old symbols are offered as stories, not promises.
A shop without unnecessary theatre
Hawthorn & Key is an online shop rather than a fictional emporium hidden behind a rain-washed shopfront. We enjoy the atmosphere of old libraries, wooden shelves and brass handles, but honesty matters more than theatre.
Each item is selected for the Hawthorn & Key collection and dispatched directly from our trusted UK fulfilment partner. This allows us to offer a broader range of carefully chosen objects without pretending that every item is waiting in an imaginary back room behind the counter.
A rainy afternoon is not strictly required when browsing, although it does improve the atmosphere considerably.
The Hawthorn Archive
Alongside the shop, The Hawthorn Archive is our journal of British folklore, local legends, seasonal customs, old symbols, curious places and the small domestic traditions that often survive long after their original explanations have faded.
The journal approaches folklore with respect, curiosity and a sensible amount of scepticism. Old beliefs are worth exploring because they tell us something about place, memory and imagination. They do not need to be presented as proven facts in order to remain interesting.
The person behind Hawthorn & Key

Hawthorn & Key was created by Evgeny Leonov, a writer and independent project founder with a longstanding interest in folklore, symbolism, old stories and the quiet ways in which objects become part of a home.
The idea behind the shop is deliberately simple. Not every meaningful object needs to arrive with a grand claim attached to it. A journal may become a place for thoughts that would otherwise be lost. A candle may soften the end of a long day. A curious box, an old-fashioned bell or a small symbolic object may find its place on a shelf simply because it feels right there.
Alongside the shop, Jevgenijus develops The Hawthorn Archive as a calm and thoughtful journal of British folklore, local legends, seasonal customs and the small traditions that continue to give ordinary places a little more character.
Hawthorn & Key is not built around promises of miracles. It is built around curiosity, atmosphere and the belief that old stories still deserve a place in modern life.
A little magic for the everyday
Hawthorn & Key is for people who enjoy objects with a little atmosphere and stories with a little depth.
It is not a school of magic, a promise of transformation or a catalogue of instant answers. It is a shop and journal for those who still appreciate the quiet pleasure of a good notebook, a candlelit room, an old tale, a carefully chosen gift and the feeling that ordinary life need not be entirely ordinary.
