The Horn Dance at Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire is a longstanding community custom involving dancers who carry sets of antlers. The performance is associated with the village’s annual calendar and has attracted interest from folklorists because of its unusual objects and choreography.

Some antlers have been subjected to scientific dating, but the age of an object does not establish an equally ancient origin for every element of the present dance. Interpretations describing the custom as an unchanged prehistoric survival require caution.

Place: Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire. Evidence: documented ceremonial practice and surviving material objects. Source trail: Abbots Bromley Horn Dance community documentation; Folklore Society studies; published research on the antlers.
