THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

The medieval Welsh chronicle known as the Annales Cambriae associates Arthur with Mount Badon and with Camlann, where Arthur and Medraut are said to have fallen. These notices belong to an important early layer of the written Arthurian tradition.

They do not provide a continuous life of Arthur and were compiled long after the events they purport to date. Their importance lies in documenting how medieval Welsh historical tradition remembered Arthur before the later romance cycle reached its familiar form.

Source trail: Annales Cambriae; British Library and modern Arthurian scholarship.
