The Artognou Slate from Tintagel

A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.

THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

A piece of slate discovered at Tintagel in 1998 bears scratched names including Artognou. Its resemblance to the name Arthur generated considerable public attention.

English Heritage cautions that the inscription is not significant evidence for King Arthur. Names beginning with Arto- were not unusual within Brittonic naming traditions. The object is important archaeological evidence without serving as a name-tag for the legendary king.
