Catherine Howard and Hampton Court’s Haunted Gallery
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Hampton Court tradition says that Catherine Howard escaped her guards after learning of the accusations against her and ran towards the chapel to plead with Henry VIII, only to be seized and dragged back. Her ghost is said to repeat the desperate journey through the Haunted Gallery.
Catherine’s detention, transfer to the Tower and execution in 1542 are historical. Historic Royal Palaces itself treats the dramatic run through the gallery as legend, a distinction often lost in popular retelling.
