Changeling Belief and Child Abduction Traditions
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
British and Irish fairy traditions include stories in which supernatural beings take a child or adult and leave a substitute behind. Changeling narratives could become explanations for illness, disability, failure to thrive or sudden changes in behaviour.
This is one of the darker areas of fairy belief. Historical interpretation must preserve the folklore while acknowledging that such explanations could contribute to mistreatment of vulnerable people. The record documents belief and its social consequences, not a supernatural diagnosis.
