Earlier Roman-Soldier Reports at Treasurer’s House
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
The National Trust’s account of Treasurer’s House records reports associated with Roman figures that pre-date or sit alongside Harry Martindale’s famous 1950s experience. One concerns a female guest of former owner Frank Green who reportedly encountered a man dressed as a Roman soldier in the cellar; other staff experiences were also later recalled.
These accounts are useful for folklore because they show a specific room becoming associated with a specific class of apparition. They remain reported experiences rather than independent archaeological evidence of ghosts.
