THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

Brownie traditions in Scotland and the Border country often describe a shy household or farm helper working unseen, particularly at night. Food such as cream, porridge or bread could be left as an acknowledgement of the work.

Versions differ over exactly what the helper accepts and why it leaves. The recurring feature is an exchange governed by etiquette rather than ordinary employment: the household receives work, while the supernatural helper remains independent.
