Frank Green’s Threat to Haunt Treasurer’s House
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Frank Green, the industrialist who acquired Treasurer’s House in 1897 and later gave it to the National Trust, was remembered as exacting about the arrangement of his rooms and collections. The house preserves a tradition that he threatened to return and haunt the property if things were moved.
Later stories of unexplained cigar smoke and other sensations have been associated with Green. The tradition is a good example of a ghost narrative growing directly from a documented personality: the meticulous owner becomes a meticulous ghost.
