THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

Folklore collections preserve a recurring motif in which a household spirit or brownie is given clothing and then leaves. In different tellings the garment may release the helper, delight it, offend it or simply alter the terms of the relationship.

The motif should not be reduced to one universal “fairy law”. Its importance lies in the repeated idea that a gift can transform a delicate relationship between a household and an unseen helper.
