The Glastonbury Thorn at Christmas
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
A distinctive hawthorn associated with Glastonbury has long been connected with accounts of flowering at Christmas. This seasonal feature became part of a wider tradition surrounding the town, its abbey and the story of Joseph of Arimathea.
The story that Joseph planted his staff at Glastonbury belongs to legend rather than established biography. Accounts of unusual flowering by particular trees are a separate botanical question and cannot authenticate the religious narrative.
Place: Glastonbury, Somerset. Evidence: local tradition and botanical observation, requiring separate interpretation. Source trail: Glastonbury Abbey’s historical interpretation; Royal Horticultural Society material on the Glastonbury Thorn; studies of Glastonbury’s medieval traditions.
