Hawthorn Haws in Autumn Rural Life
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
After spring blossom, hawthorn bears red fruits known as haws. These fruits are an important part of autumn hedgerow ecology and have also appeared in traditional human uses. Their presence shows why hawthorn’s cultural significance cannot be limited to May Day alone.
Historical references to medicinal or food uses should not be mistaken for modern advice to consume or prepare remedies. Evidence: botanical and rural-use context. Source trail: Woodland Trust, common hawthorn species profile; Royal Horticultural Society, hawthorn information. Journal context.
