The Haxey Hood Game
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
The Haxey Hood is a winter custom held in the Isle of Axholme in Lincolnshire. Its communal contest involves moving a leather hood towards one of the local public houses.
Stories of the custom’s origins are part of the local tradition, but cannot by themselves establish how old the event is. Its continuing performance provides evidence of living community folklore.
Place: Haxey, Lincolnshire. Evidence: documented calendar custom and local origin legend. Sources for further study: Folklore Society accounts of calendar customs and local Haxey Hood community records.
