Helston’s Flora Day is known for processional dancing through the Cornish town. The Furry Dance is accompanied by music and takes different forms over the course of the celebration.

Its history is best approached through dated local records and accounts of the dance as performed, rather than assumptions that a springtime celebration must preserve an unchanged ancient ritual. The event is also an expression of present-day civic identity.

Place: Helston, Cornwall. Evidence: recorded and continuing calendar custom. Source trail: Helston local historical collections and studies of Cornish seasonal customs.
