Hob Hurst’s House and the Hob Tradition
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Hob Hurst’s House in the Peak District is a prehistoric funerary monument whose later name attached the site to a local “hob” tradition. The archaeological monument is far older than the supernatural name associated with it.
The place is useful evidence for the way folklore settles onto older landscapes. A prehistoric site can acquire a later supernatural identity without that later story explaining the monument’s original construction or purpose.
