Little John appears as one of Robin Hood’s principal companions in the older ballad tradition. His presence is particularly important in narratives that show the outlaws acting as a group rather than as the adventures of one solitary hero.

Later retellings supply additional encounters, character traits and origin stories. Those later developments should not all be projected back onto the earliest surviving texts. The historical value of Little John’s appearances lies in what they reveal about the formation of a recognisable cast of characters.

Evidence: surviving ballad texts. Source trail: A Gest of Robyn Hode; Francis James Child, The English and Scottish Popular Ballads; early Robin Hood material in British Library collections.
