Maid Marian Joined Robin Hood Through May Games
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Maid Marian is central to modern Robin Hood stories, but she is not central to the earliest surviving outlaw ballads. Her route into Robin’s company is associated with festive performance and May games, where Robin Hood and Marian could appear as figures in seasonal entertainment.
Over time, the performance traditions merged and Marian became Robin’s beloved and eventually one of the legend’s principal characters. The development shows folklore growing through combination rather than simple preservation.
