THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

At the Clootie Well near Munlochy on the Black Isle, visitors have tied pieces of cloth to surrounding trees. The practice is associated with beliefs about healing and the symbolic leaving behind of illness.

The cloth offerings are evidence of ritual action and personal belief, not proof that the water or trees possess medical powers. The site also raises practical questions about conservation and the impact of materials left in woodland.

Place: Munlochy, Highland, Scotland. Evidence: observed offering practice and recorded local belief. Source trail: Scottish folklore studies of healing wells and regional heritage interpretation.
