The Robin Hood Garland and Early Ballad Tradition
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Robin Hood’s story circulated through ballads and later printed collections, often called garlands. These compilations helped shape which episodes remained familiar to readers, but they are not evidence that all the events described happened to a single historical outlaw.
The printed and oral traditions must be distinguished from later novels, theatre and film. Evidence: literary transmission. Source trail: British Library collections of early Robin Hood ballads; Francis James Child, The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. Journal context.
