Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest
A record in The Hawthorn Archive, preserving folklore with its place, type and source context attached.
Sherwood Forest became one of the most durable landscapes of the Robin Hood legend. Nottingham and its Sheriff have old connections with the tradition, and later retellings increasingly concentrated Robin’s geography in Nottinghamshire.
The association is folkloric and literary rather than proof that one identifiable historical Robin lived beneath a particular Sherwood tree. The legendary landscape records centuries of storytelling, heritage and local identity.
