THE HAWTHORN ARCHIVE

A remembered remedy for being fairy-led or pixy-led was to turn an item of clothing inside out. In West Country material the gesture appears alongside stories of travellers who became confused about their route.

The action is sometimes given a modern symbolic explanation in which reversal breaks enchantment, but that explanation should not be presented as a single historical theory shared by all tellers. The securely recordable element is the remedy itself and its place within traditions of supernatural disorientation.
